DEPARTMENT OF ANESTHESIOLOGY
Anesthesiologists provide for the medical management of patients who
are rendered unconscious and/or insensitive to pain during surgical,
obstetrical and other medical procedures. In addition to assisting other
specialties with a comprehensive pain management service, the department
also provides extensive support to the critical care areas, as well
as obstetrical, pediatric and emergency services.
DEPARTMENT OF EMERGENCY MEDICINE
Twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year, a team
of emergency room physicians and nurses handle patients' acute care
needs utilizing the full range of hospital diagnostic and treatment
capabilities.
DEPARTMENT OF FAMILY PRACTICE
Primary care physicians provide comprehensive and continuing care for
patients of all ages. A focus on wellness and early intervention of
disease are the goals of family practice.
DEPARTMENT OF MEDICINE
The following specialties and subspecialties are part of the Department
of Medicine:
Allergy & Immunology
Allergists and immunologists treat allergic conditions such as asthma,
hay fever, drug sensitivities and food and insect allergies. They also
treat abnormalities of the immune system related to disease and immunodeficiency
states.
Cardiology
Cardiologists are experts in disorders of the heart and circulatory
system, including congenital heart defects (murmurs, valve abnormalities)
and acquired heart conditions (angina, heart failure, heart attacks).
Dermatology
Disorders of the skin or skin irritations are assessed and treated by
dermatologists. These include skin cancer, acne, eczema, psoriasis and
rashes.
Endocrinology
Endocrinologists treat problems associated with the body's hormone producing
systems including the pituitary gland, thyroid, adrenal, ovaries, testes
and pancreas. Thyroid disorders, diabetes and infertility are among
the conditions treated by this medical specialty.
Gastroenterology
This specialty deals with disorders of the digestive system including
the liver, gall bladder, pancreas, esophagus, stomach and small and
large intestine. Ulcers, hiatal hernias and diseases of the bowel are
commonly treated by gastroenterologists.
Hematology/Oncology
Hematologists treat blood disorders which affect the body's production
of red blood cells, platelets and white blood cells, including anemia,
leukemia, lymphoma, leukopenia and hemophilia. Oncologists are specialists
in the diagnosis and treatment of all types of cancer.
Infectious Diseases
Specialists in infectious diseases identify and treat infections caused
by bacteria, viruses, parasites and fungi.
Internal
Medicine
Internists are trained in a variety of subspecialties and are educated
to deal with complex illnesses and multiple severe illnesses in the
same patient. They are trained broadly and extensively to identify elusive
medical disorders and to care for the medical needs of most adults.
Nephrology
Nephrologists treat all forms of kidney disease including renal failure,
hypertension and kidney stones.
Neurology
Neurology deals with disorders of the nervous system, both central within
the brain and the peripheral nervous system and spinal cord, including
strokes, seizures, epilepsy, headaches, sleep disorders, muscular dystrophy
and multiple sclerosis.
Psychiatry
Psychiatrists treat patients suffering from emotional disorders and
psychological conditions such as depression, schizophrenia and personality
disorders.
Podiatry
Disorders of the foot are corrected medically or surgically by a podiatrist.
Common conditions include in-grown toenails, corns, calluses, planters
warts and bunions.
Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation
Physiatrists provide rehabilitation to victims of strokes, accidents
and injuries as well as those suffering from persistent neck and back
pain, with exercise and therapy rather than with surgery or drugs.
Pulmonary Diseases
Pulmonary specialists treat disorders of the respiratory tract including
the upper airways and lungs. These include emphysema, bronchitis, asthma,
sleep disorders and pneumonia.
Rheumatology
Rheumatology deals with disorders of the joints, muscles and connective
tissues. Rheumatologists treat patients with degenerative and rheumatoid
arthritis, osteoporosis and systemic lupus.
DEPARTMENT OF OBSTETRICS AND GYNECOLOGY
A full range of women's health services for both healthy and high risk
patients is provided by the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
Maternal/Fetal Medicine
Specialists provide consultation and antenatal testing on high-risk
pregnant women.
Gynecology/Oncology
Specialists work with referring physicians to treat cancer.
Infertility & Reproductive Endocrinology
Specialists treat both hormonal and fertility problems.
DEPARTMENT OF PATHOLOGY
Pathologists, medical technologists and other laboratory professionals
provide diagnostic support to the medical staff in the care and management
of their patients. These services include examination of tissue biopsies,
pap smears and analysis of blood and body fluids performed in the chemistry
and hematology sections of the laboratory. In addition, bacterial cultures
and antibiotic testing are performed in the microbiology division. A
full complement of transfusion services is provided by the hospital's
blood bank.
DEPARTMENT OF PEDIATRICS
Pediatricians provide a complete range of medical services necessary
to meet the needs of sick infants, children and adolescents. Supplementing
the pediatric staff are experts in subspecialties of allergy and immunology,
neurology, psychology, infectious disease, endocrinology, otolaryngology,
cardiology, anesthesiology, ophthalmology, surgery, dentistry and psychiatry,
as well as in-patient board certified pediatricians. The emergency services
department is always ready for pediatric patients. This area has specialized,
child-sized equipment, on-staff support and a separate pediatric waiting
room. A pediatrician is in the hospital around the clock to care for
any child who requires immediate medical attention.
Neonatology
The Neonatology Department provides a full range of around the clock
specialized medical care for high-risk, premature, and sick infants.

DEPARTMENT OF RADIOLOGY
Our staff of radiologists provides service in all areas of diagnostic
radiology including mammography, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computerized
tomography scanning (CT scanning), ultrasound and routine X-ray studies.
The latest techniques in the areas of angiography and interventional
radiology are used to diagnose and treat diseases of the blood vessels
and various organs of the body. Nuclear medicine, which involves the
injection of small doses of radioactive material, is used to evaluate
areas such as the heart, lungs, bones and thyroid gland. Physicians
in our accredited mammography facility utilize state-of-the-art equipment.
DEPARTMENT OF SURGERY
The subspecialties within the Department of Surgery include:
General Surgery
General surgeons treat diseases affecting the digestive system, the
abdomen, the breast, head and neck, the vascular system, and the heart.
They also manage diseases of the endocrine system. In addition, general
surgeons provide total management of the trauma patient and all phases
of care for the injured patient.
Neurosurgery
Neurosurgery deals with the treatment of diseases of the central nervous
system, including vascular disorders and tumors of the brain and spinal
cord, along with cervical and lumbar disc problems.
Ophthalmology
Ophthalmologists diagnose and treat various eye disorders including
cataracts, glaucoma, retinal, diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration
and corneal disease. They may prescribe corrective lenses, medications
or surgery, including plastic surgery, as necessary.
Oral Surgery
Oral surgeons perform surgery to treat disease, deformity or injury
of the mouth, face and jaws. Procedures include reconstructive jaw surgery,
surgical correction of temporal mandibular joint disorders, extraction
of impacted teeth, and removal of benign tumors from tissues within
the mouth.
Orthopaedic Surgery
Orthopaedic surgeons deal with the preservation and restoration of form
and function of the bones and joints, and the muscles, tendons and ligaments
associated with them. Treatment includes medical, surgical and physical
rehabilitative methods.
Otolaryngology
Otolaryngology is the medical and surgical treatment of the head and
neckparticularly the ears, nose and throat. Otolaryngologists
perform facial reconstructive surgery and surgery involving tumors of
the sinuses, throat and neck. They also diagnose and treat hearing and
speaking disorders.
Plastic Surgery
Plastic surgery deals with the functional and aesthetic management of
congenital and acquired defects of the head, neck, trunk and extremities.
Plastic surgeons treat severe wounds and burns, tumors of the head,
neck, skin and breast, pressure ulcers and hand injuries, in addition
to performing cosmetic reconstructive procedures.
Thoracic Surgery
Thoracic surgeons perform operations on organs within the chest cavity,
including the lungs, pleura, the chest wall, esophagus, mediastinum
and diaphragm. In addition, they perform heart surgery to correct congenital
heart problems and acquired heart disease.
Urology
Specialists in urology handle disorders of the male reproductive system
and male and female urinary tracts, including those affecting the kidney,
ureter, urinary bladder, prostate, urethra, testicles and surrounding
structures. They also treat bladder and kidney infections and obstructions
due to kidney stones or tumors.
Vascular Surgery
Vascular surgeons perform surgical repair or bypass of vessels to re-establish
blood flow caused by disease or damage.
